I'm a huge fan of cooking, and you can see that through all my recipes and tips! But there are times I have seen a few foreign ingredients that seem different from what I usually see. That's why I do my research to make sure that I find out exactly what it is and how to prepare it! When you are preparing a dish, you may have come across the ingredient: Chicken base. But what is chicken base, exactly? Is it the same with broth or using a bouillon?

Read on as I show you what chicken base is and how you can prepare it for your dishes!

What Is Chicken Base?

If you have heard of chicken stock before, chicken base is a heavily-concentrated form of it. This is a kind of chicken stock that has been simmered for a longer time, with the vegetables and other ingredients melting into the liquid, which created a rich reduction.

As a result, the chicken base will end up being fragrant and flavorful, either powdered, as a cube, or a very thick liquid. The chicken base is dark and similar to the colors of beef broth, used in many recipes that require more chicken flavor and thickening. You can make your own chicken base or find it in your local grocery store.

Chicken Base vs. Chicken Stock vs. Chicken Broth

Aren't all of these the same as long as it's made of chicken? The answer is NO! They each have their own differences, despite the similar meaning of terms.

Chicken stock is mostly made out of the whole chicken, including the bones. It contains spices, herbs, or vegetables to make it even more flavorful. Bouillon is a dehydrated stock, which is saltier than the chicken base.

Chicken broth is made out of meat without the bones, making it less rich and fuller than stock. Chicken base is NOT made out of chicken broth, as it's hard to thicken it to the consistency, it is known for today.

What makes chicken base different is its consistency and flavor. It tastes similar to the chicken stock (as it is its concentrated form) but even richer to the point that it has a thick consistency though it's better than the chicken bouillon regarding thickening, color, and the chicken flavor.

Uses of Chicken Base

So what can you use chicken base for anyway? Here are some yummy ideas and recipes you can try out!

  • The best way to use chicken base is through making a thick chicken noodle soup. Let the rich and flavorful chicken base simmer with vegetables and chicken meat, along with herbs and spices, and you've got a warm appetizer or filling meal.
  • If you want to add more flavor to your gravies or stews, then this is a better choice compared to using bouillons.
  • Chicken base is ideal for thicker soups such as chowder. It can also be used for curries and Indian recipes.
  • You can opt to use chicken base for dumplings, adding it to the filling's mix for a thicker and flavorful result.

Tips on How to Prepare Chicken Base

Now that you know what chicken base is, how do you prepare it? Here are some tips to follow:

You can make chicken base at home by using whole chicken, preferred vegetables, seasonings, and herbs. Let it simmer over medium-low heat until all the ingredients have dissolved and the liquid is now about two-thirds than it was original. Take note that this will take a few hours.

Once it's done, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth, separating the liquid from the fat. Place the fat in the fridge for it to solidify. Remove it from the refrigerator and place it in an ice cube tray, freezing it solid. Store it in a bag for about three months, using one or two cubes for every cup needed in any recipe.

If you need to substitute chicken base, then you can do so by using one bouillon cube (which equals to one teaspoon of chicken base).
